Latakia is Syria's principal container gateway: its CMA CGM-run Latakia International Container Terminal (LICT) handles close to 95% of the country's containerised trade under UN/LOCODE SY ALD. Current capacity stands at roughly 250,000 TEU a year, but a 30-year concession signed in May 2025, backed by about €200 million, is set to lift it to 625,000 TEU by the end of 2026 and eventually beyond 1 million TEU, with dredging to accommodate vessels of up to 16-metre draft. In November 2025 AD Ports Group acquired a 20% minority stake in the terminal alongside CMA CGM. Besides containers, the port handles general cargo, project shipments and dry bulk. Hinterland distribution to Aleppo, Homs and Damascus runs mainly by road, as the rail network remains only partly usable after years of conflict. Customs and import clearance go through Syrian authorities, and importers should still verify the sanctions framework, which eased after 2024 but remains in flux. For breakbulk and bulk, the southern port of Tartus is the regional alternative, while sanctions-sensitive container flows are often routed via Mersin in Turkey or Beirut in Lebanon.
