Twenty-one berths totalling some 4,055 metres of quay, three of them dedicated to boxes, make Shuwaikh the backbone of Kuwait's commercial shipping. Operating under UN/LOCODE KW KWI and managed by the Kuwait Ports Authority, the port handled 613,093 TEU in 2024 across a container terminal of about 26 hectares. Beyond containers, that year saw roughly 3.23 million tonnes of general cargo and more than 177,000 vehicles cross the quays, alongside project cargo, machinery, foodstuffs and reefer consignments serving importers across the Kuwait City metropolitan area. Its position on the Persian Gulf links it to the main trade lanes connecting Asia, Europe and the wider Arabian Gulf. Inland distribution runs almost entirely by road, as Kuwait has little rail freight infrastructure, so haulage to and from the terminal is truck-based. For heavy-lift, bulk and industrial flows, the southern port of Shuaiba is the logical alternative, while crude exports move through Mina Al Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah. Shippers moving containerised cargo into Kuwait should treat Shuwaikh as the primary gateway while planning for road-only hinterland access.
