Roughly 2.67 million tonnes a year is the design throughput of Al Khair, a dedicated oil terminal about three kilometres southeast of Port Sudan on the Red Sea. Built between 2001 and 2003 and run by the state Sudanese Petroleum Corporation, it berths tankers of up to around 50,000 dwt drawing 15 metres. This is a liquid-petroleum facility only: there are no container terminals, no reefer capacity and no rail link inland, contrary to earlier descriptions. Sudan's ongoing civil war and attacks on the wider Port Sudan area weigh on operations and make calls hard to plan. General cargo, containers and ordinary imports are handled at neighbouring Port Sudan, while crude exports run through the Bashayer terminals further south. Forwarders should treat Al Khair strictly as a bulk-liquid oil berth.
