Alexandria's port complex handled about 2.6 million TEU in fiscal year 2025/26, up 13% year on year, alongside a record total throughput of more than 82 million tonnes (up 10%) — the strongest season yet for Egypt's historic principal Mediterranean port. Together with its sister harbour El Dekheila, some six kilometres west, it handles a large share of the country's foreign trade, estimated at around half of national merchandise flows. Container, general cargo and dry bulk all move through the complex — as one of the world's biggest wheat importers, Egypt routes substantial grain volumes here — with dry bulk the fastest-growing category, up 19.3% to 36.5 million tonnes, while El Dekheila adds steel capacity. Container operations are split between the Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling Company (ACCHC) and Hutchison Ports (AICT), which runs terminals at both Alexandria and El Dekheila, and dangerous goods are accepted except for IMO classes 1 and 7 (explosives and radioactive material). Customs clearance uses a one-window procedure with on-site agency coordination. Road and rail carry cargo inland to Cairo and the Nile Delta. For pure transshipment and the largest container mainlines, however, Damietta and Port Said remain Egypt's stronger Mediterranean calls, while Sokhna serves Suez-adjacent traffic on the Red Sea.
