Built by Esso in 1970 as one of the world's first LNG export plants, Marsa el Brega (LY MBR) on Libya's Gulf of Sidra has seen its four-train liquefaction complex — nominally about 3.2 million tonnes a year — sit idle since the 2011 civil war. The site today functions as a pure hydrocarbon and petrochemical terminal, shipping crude oil, ammonia, methanol and refined products, but no containers or conventional general cargo. Three sealine berths, a products quay and dedicated liquefied-gas, acid, methanol and ammonia jetties handle the traffic. Operations are run by the Sirte Oil Company, a subsidiary of the state National Oil Corporation. There is effectively no commercial hinterland gateway here for trade goods; the port serves the export industry alone. For containers, breakbulk or project cargo, Misrata — Libya's principal container port — and Benghazi are the practical alternatives.
