Up to three million barrels of crude a day can leave Iraq through the Al-Basra Oil Terminal when all four supertanker berths run at capacity, with a maximum draft of about 21 metres. Lying roughly 50 kilometres southeast of the Al-Faw Peninsula in the Persian Gulf, the facility was commissioned in 1974 as Mina al-Bakr and renamed ABOT in 2003. Crude from the southern Iraqi fields reaches the platform through three 48-inch pipelines running from Al-Faw and then undersea. Together with its sister terminal Khor al-Amaya (KAAOT), ABOT carries the bulk of Iraq's crude-oil exports. It is strictly a tanker terminal — no container, breakbulk, RoRo or customs handling takes place here. For containerised and general cargo in southern Iraq, Umm Qasr is the relevant port, and Khor al-Zubair handles dry bulk.
