Three berths, about 1,000 m of quay and roughly 1.5 million TEU of annual capacity make Aqaba (JO AQJ) the backbone of Jordan's maritime trade – and its only seaport on the Red Sea. The Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), a joint venture of APM Terminals and the Aqaba Development Corporation, passed one million TEU for the first time in 2025 and set a monthly record of 94,541 TEU in September 2025. A new ship-to-shore crane installed in 2025 allows the terminal to work vessels up to 400 m long. Beyond containers, the industrial berths to the south handle major exports of phosphate, potash and fertilizers, alongside grain and general-cargo imports. Customs clearance runs through Jordan Customs within the ASEZA special economic zone. Inland distribution is overwhelmingly by road, serving Amman some 330 km away and onward traffic toward Iraq. With no second Jordanian seaport, genuine alternatives are regional only, such as transshipment via Jeddah or Egyptian Mediterranean ports. This makes Aqaba a strategic single point of entry that shippers plan around carefully.
