Some 200 kilometres off Rivers State in water more than 1,100 metres deep, Akpo is not a coastal harbour but a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit with capacity for around 2 million barrels of crude. Operated by TotalEnergies alongside CNOOC and other partners, the field averaged roughly 124,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023. Its only export function is transferring crude to tankers offshore, while associated gas feeds Nigeria's LNG plant. There are no container, breakbulk or RoRo operations and no customs gateway for commercial goods here. For freight forwarders moving general cargo, the terminal is simply not relevant. Commercial shipments into southern Nigeria run through Onne, Port Harcourt or the Lagos ports of Apapa and Tin Can.
