Logs, zinc concentrates, cement, phosphate rock and petroleum products make up the bulk of what moves through Akita, the principal cargo port on Honshu's north-west coast facing the Sea of Japan. Spread over 17 berths, the port handles roughly 9.7 million tonnes and about 3,600 vessels a year, and since 2011 has been designated an international container base port on the Sea of Japan side. The adjacent port of Funakawa adds oil, timber, logs and iron ore as part of the wider Akita Bay industrial district. Hinterland access runs by road and rail, including a dedicated port railway line into the Akita network. For forwarders, this makes Akita a dependable regional gateway for bulk, breakbulk and modest container volumes in northern Japan. Larger container flows or Pacific-coast routings are better served by Niigata or by ports such as Tomakomai and Yokohama.
