IHI and its successor JMU AMTEC have shaped Aioi far more than any cargo line ever did: the waterfront in Hyogo Prefecture is a shipbuilding and ship-repair complex on the Seto Inland Sea rather than a commercial freight port. There are no berths where ocean-going vessels load or discharge general cargo; instead, overhead cranes rated from 80 to 130 tonnes serve newbuilding, conversion, repair and ship-breaking work. Inbound movements are dominated by yard steel, blocks and heavy components for vessel construction, not by containers or breakbulk for onward distribution.
