Ain Sokhna is a crude-oil transshipment terminal, not a box port: it is the Red Sea head of the SUMED pipeline, operated by the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company. Three single-buoy moorings (SBMs) take tankers of up to 500,000 dwt, and 24 storage tanks hold roughly 2.9 million m³ — about 18 million barrels. Crude arriving from the Gulf is discharged here and pumped across Egypt to Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean, bypassing the Suez Canal for very large crude carriers that cannot transit fully laden; in 2025 SUMED moved around 50 million tonnes of crude, nearly double earlier volumes after traffic rerouted around the Red Sea. After tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated in spring 2026, the pipeline gained further strategic weight: data provider Vortexa estimated that about 23% of Gulf crude exports rerouted amid the crisis (averaging roughly 3.75 million barrels per day) moved via Ain Sokhna, while Saudi loadings from Yanbu jumped to as much as 4.6 million barrels per day by late March 2026, several times the 1.4 million bpd seen in February. The terminal sits within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), a fast-growing industrial and logistics cluster. Containerised cargo, however, is handled not by this oil terminal but by the immediately adjacent Port of Sokhna (DP World), which handled about 1.75 million TEU in 2024 and keeps expanding. Shippers moving boxes through the Sokhna area should therefore address DP World, not the SUMED terminal.
