What is today a state recreation pier popular with anglers was, until 1950, a working sugar-shipping wharf: Ahukini Landing on Kauai's east coast loaded plantation sugar brought down by the Ahukini Terminal Railway from 1920. After the deeper Nawiliwili Harbour opened in 1930, traffic shifted away and cargo operations gradually ceased. The site now has no commercial handling capability whatsoever. Ocean freight for Kauai moves through Nawiliwili Harbour and Port Allen.
