Iron ore from the Sierra Almagrera and esparto grass for British paper mills once made Águilas (ES AGU) one of the Mediterranean's busiest mineral-export ports, loaded across the El Hornillo iron pier opened in 1903. Commercial ore traffic ended in 2001, and the pier now stands as a preserved industrial monument, one of the few iron loading piers left in Europe. Today the harbour is dominated by a fishing fleet with its own auction hall, alongside berths for yachts and leisure craft. No regular facilities exist for containers, roll-on/roll-off or dry-bulk cargo. Forwarders handling Murcia-region freight route shipments through the far larger commercial port of Cartagena.
