Around 3 million tonnes a year, a container terminal of roughly 127,000 TEU and the title of the world's leading sardine-exporting port: Agadir is Morocco's main fishing harbour and fourth-busiest commercial port. Serving the Souss-Massa region, it ships citrus, early vegetables, cereals, coal and petroleum products, with a cold-chain backbone built for agricultural exports — temperature-controlled warehouses and power for some 900 reefer containers, backed by a large onshore fish-processing industry. Its container terminal — three berths, about 280 metres of quay and 10.5 metres of depth, operated by Marsa Maroc's SMA subsidiary — offers feeder links to Spain, France, Portugal and the western Mediterranean rather than deepsea mainline calls. Road connections link the port to Marrakech, Casablanca and the interior, and the facilities operate under the national ports authority (ANP). For large-scale container and transshipment volumes, however, Tanger Med remains Morocco's principal gateway.
