The name still says Naval Air Station, but Adak has been a civilian port since the Navy's departure in 2002 — a year-round, ice-free deep-water harbour in the Aleutians run via the Aleut Corporation. Its role centres on fisheries support, transshipment and oilfield services, built around a fully equipped cargo pier and a fuelling pier. Adak Fisheries processes Pacific cod, pollock, mackerel, halibut and snow and king crab, while the port handles ship-to-ship transfers of frozen seafood. Fuel, water, provisions, cold storage and crew exchanges serve the Seattle- and Alaska-based fishing fleets. There is no hinterland to speak of: Adak is a remote island roughly 1,900 km west of the Alaska Peninsula, with no road network beyond the settlement. For general cargo and containers, Dutch Harbor/Unalaska is the principal Aleutian port, with Kodiak as a further option.
