Today Ad Dakhla is first and foremost a fishing harbour rather than a commercial gateway: pelagic fish, octopus and sardines dominate throughput at this port on the Moroccan-administered Western Sahara coast, in the city once known as Villa Cisneros. The existing port combines fishing with limited general-cargo traffic and offers a quay depth of around 8 metres. Large-scale container or liner services are not established here. About 40 km to the north, however, the 1.2-billion-dollar Dakhla Atlantic Port is under construction, combining trade, fishing and shipyard facilities; on completion (targeted for 2028) it is designed to handle up to 35 million tonnes a year across deep-water berths with draughts up to 16 metres. Until then, containerised and general-cargo shipments for the region effectively move through other ports. Agadir and the closer port of Laâyoune (El Marsa) are practical alternatives, with Casablanca for container traffic.
