Operating as a trade port since 1972, Zayed Port (Mina Zayed) on the Persian Gulf reinvented itself after December 2012, when its container business moved to the new Khalifa Port. Today it is Abu Dhabi's main gateway for general cargo, dry bulk, breakbulk, project cargo, Ro-Ro and reefer shipments, with an annual throughput capacity of about 7.5 million tonnes, alongside an award-winning cruise terminal. Recent figures show cargo volumes up around 16% to roughly 1.45 million tonnes and cruise passengers up about 8% to some 107,000. Around 14 m alongside depth and 21 berths in a sheltered basin suit heavy and oversized consignments that sit awkwardly in standard boxes. Connections to the emirate's industrial estates and free zones run by road, increasingly complemented by the UAE's Etihad Rail network. Customs and handling are managed through the established structures of AD Ports Group. For FCL container moves or transhipment, Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali are the right choices, leaving Zayed Port to play to its breakbulk and cruise strengths.
