Fertiliser, grain, citrus and offshore petroleum supplies have long moved through Abu Qir (UN/LOCODE EGAKI), a Mediterranean port some 30 km northeast of Alexandria in Egypt. The harbour handles urea and liquid ammonia from the adjacent fertiliser industry, grain via a permanently moored silo vessel, metals, foodstuffs and project cargo, alongside a naval basin and a small fishing harbour. Its newest asset is a Hutchison Ports container terminal (HPH Abu Qir) — a US$730 million, 38-year concession with the Egyptian Navy — featuring a 1,200 m quay, 18 m draught and 60 hectares of terminal yard, with a target capacity of 2 million TEU; it is the first Egyptian terminal to run equipment control over a 4G network, with Evergreen Marine holding a stake. Further deep-water berths of up to 22 m draught are under construction, expected to add substantial container capacity to Egypt's Mediterranean coast in the coming years. A dedicated highway is planned to link the terminal to Alexandria and the national road network to Cairo. Shippers needing established liner services or larger volumes still route through neighbouring Alexandria and El Dekheila.
