Few ports are as closely tied to a single industry as Aberdeen is to North Sea energy: for more than fifty years this Scottish port has served as Europe's leading oil-and-gas marine base, spanning exploration, production and, increasingly, decommissioning and offshore wind. Around 7,000 vessels and over 3 million tonnes of cargo moved through in 2023, making it one of the UK's busiest ports without being a container gateway. The 2023 South Harbour expansion – roughly £420 million – added 1.5 km of deep-water berths (9–15 m) able to take vessels up to 300 m, with a SEPA waste licence for offshore decommissioning. In 2026 alone, more than 100 offshore wind vessels have already called at Aberdeen, including jack-up installation units such as Blue Tern, confirming the port's position as Scotland's principal offshore wind logistics base. Cargo runs to grain, project and heavy-lift loads, liquid and dry bulk, forest products and foodstuffs, handled as breakbulk rather than full container traffic. Road and rail link the quays to central Scotland. Shippers needing scheduled container services are better served by Grangemouth or English hubs such as Felixstowe and Teesport.
