> Due to rail transport disruptions in Germany and low water levels on the Rhine, the delegate for economic national supply has authorized the early release of up to 30,000 m³ of aviation fuel from strategic reserves for Zurich Airport, valid from October 15 to November 1, 2026.

---

The Delegate for Economic National Supply (WL), Roland Pfister, has approved the early release of mandatory strategic reserves of aviation fuel (jet fuel/kerosene) to ensure the supply of Zurich Airport. This decision is prompted by ongoing rail transport problems in Germany as well as low water levels on the Rhine, which are hampering the transport of fuels into Switzerland.

Up to 30,000 cubic meters of aviation fuel can be released, which corresponds to approximately 6.5% of the total mandatory strategic reserves for this product. The measure is time-limited and applies from October 15 to November 1, 2026.

According to the supply situation overview from the Federal Office for Economic National Supply (BWL) dated October 15, 2026, aviation fuel reserves currently cover approximately 76 days of consumption, compared to a target value of 90 days. The decline is attributed to increased demand growth in air traffic following the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the BWL, the supply of gasoline, diesel, and heating oil remains secured despite the tense situation and exceeds the respective target values.

Affected companies in the air cargo and flight operations sector at Zurich Airport should expect possible short-term adjustments in fuel disposition. The release from strategic reserves is a temporary bridging measure until November 1, 2026, and not a structural solution.
