> The USA implements the end of the $800 duty-free threshold for all countries and shipping methods. Deliveries for DACH online shops will become more expensive and complicated.

For online shops and shippers to the USA, things are getting uncomfortable.

The American customs authority CBP has now permanently enshrined the end of the previous 800 USD duty-free allowance in its regulations. This affects goods from all countries and across all modes of transport.

The duty-free allowance used to mean: Goods valued up to 800 USD could mostly be sent to the USA without customs duties and with simplified processing.

This option is now gone.

This is not entirely new. The USA had already suspended the duty-free allowance worldwide in August 2025. However, the new regulations effective June 24, 2026, will provide a permanent and clearly regulated solution.

The new requirements already apply to courier, express, air, and sea freight shipments. For international postal shipments, a new simplified import procedure will come into effect on July 24.

In the future, small packages will also require clear information about the goods, value, origin, and customs tariff number. Additionally, applicable duties, taxes, and fees will apply.

For DACH online shops, this represents a direct cost blow. An order of 100 or 200 euros is no longer automatically duty-free. Additional costs may arise for customs clearance, brokers, data transmission, and expenses.

Especially for inexpensive products, the clearance can ultimately cost almost more than the goods themselves.

Anyone selling to the USA should review their prices and shipping terms.

Important aspects include:

Properly register tariff numbers

Indicate country of origin correctly

Calculate customs duties and clearance fees

Clarify whether the sender or the recipient pays

Protect customers from surprises at delivery

For small online shops, DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is particularly interesting. This means that customs and fees are ideally included at the time of sale. Otherwise, the American customer may receive an additional bill upon delivery and may refuse the shipment.

In short: The package is still allowed to enter the USA. However, it is no longer simple and duty-free.

---

The previous duty-free limit in the US was 800 USD per recipient per day.

The duty-free treatment was suspended on August 29, 2025, for goods from all countries.

The CBP regulations from June 24, 2026, make the suspension indefinite.

The rule applies to mail, courier, express, air freight, sea freight, and other types of imports.

Non-postal shipments must be declared using an appropriate customs procedure in the US ACE system.

The new process for international mail shipments will generally take effect on July 24, 2026.

Certain additional requirements must be met no later than October 22, 2026.

Mail shipments valued up to 2,500 USD can utilize a simplified procedure under certain conditions.

A formal import declaration may still be necessary for certain goods, permits, special duties, or regulatory requirements.

Genuine private gifts up to 100 USD and certain personal travel items remain subject to separate exceptions.
