> WILD MAA and BIBO REGIO are to operate on HVO100. The Rhine ports have initiated the conversion with an initial refueling.

---

The Swiss Rhine Ports have begun converting their own vessels to HVO100. Following an announcement on October 2nd, the first refueling was successfully completed. The fuel is to be used on the tug and pushboat WILD MAA as well as on the bilge oil and oil containment vessel BIBO REGIO.

HVO is a renewable diesel fuel. It is produced by treating oils or fats with hydrogen. Used cooking oils and animal fats can serve as raw materials, for example. The designation HVO100 stands for the unmixed use of this fuel. The fuel continues to be burned in the engine.

The Rhine Ports cite a possible reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 90 percent over the entire lifecycle compared to fossil diesel. This refers to both production and use combined. This figure is not proof of a corresponding reduction in all emissions directly from the vessel. For the assessment, the origin of the fuel used is also relevant.

According to the operator, certified HVO100 is used. According to the announcement, no technical modifications are required for the affected vessels. Other operators should not, however, derive a blanket approval for their own engines from this. Those planning a conversion should clarify suitability with the manufacturer and supplier.

For shippers, this is a concrete step in port operations. However, the announcement concerns the Rhine Ports' own fleet. It does not mean that all cargo ships heading to Basel now run on HVO. Nor can the stated savings simply be allocated to each individual customer shipment.

Those using environmental data for transport offers should therefore document the quantities used and the calculation method. Fuel price and availability should also be factored into the calculation. The Rhine Ports cite higher costs compared to conventional marine diesel. A meaningful comparison thus considers technology, proof of origin, and actual operations together.

---

When it comes to environmental statements, inquire about the source verification and calculation method. Converting other vessels requires a separate technical inspection. In short: HVO can improve the carbon footprint, but the savings must be aligned with actual operational usage.
