> The PanStar Acro is transporting actual cargo from Busan via the Arctic to Europe. South Korea is thus testing the Northern Sea Route commercially for the first time.

South Korea is taking the Arctic route seriously. The PanStar Acro departed from the port of Busan on August 22 for a commercial test voyage toward Europe. The 2,758-TEU vessel travels via the Bering Sea and the Northern Sea Route along the Russian Arctic.

On board are 837 TEU. Cargo includes chemical products, automotive parts, and used vehicles. Approximately 100 TEU are empty containers. This makes it not merely a demonstration run, but a test under real transport conditions.

Planned port calls include Felixstowe in Great Britain, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Gdansk in Poland. Subsequently, the vessel is scheduled to return to Busan via the Arctic. The entire round trip is estimated to take approximately 40 to 45 days.

Of particular interest is the question of whether this can develop into a long-term shipping connection between Asia and Europe. The Arctic route is considerably shorter than the classic route via the Suez Canal. However, whether it is also more economical remains to be seen.

That is precisely what the test voyage is intended to demonstrate. South Korea aims to collect data on transit time, fuel consumption, costs, and operational risks. The government is pursuing the objective of expanding Arctic shipping long-term and positioning Busan more strongly as a logistics hub.

This will not be straightforward. The route is season-dependent, ice and weather remain difficult to calculate, and the voyage passes through a geopolitically sensitive area along Russia. Reuters therefore points to possible tensions with Western partners. South Korea coordinated the journey with Moscow.

For maritime freight, this does not suddenly create a third standard route alongside Suez and the Cape of Good Hope. However, what was once a political project has now become an actual transport operation.

For freight forwarders, the most important thing is: Do not yet include Arctic routes in normal transit time calculations.

The PanStar Acro is a test. Only after that will we see how reliable the schedule, costs and actual transit times really are.

Should such services be offered regularly, the route could become particularly interesting for Northeast Asia. Busan, China and Japan are geographically favorable.

At the same time, shippers using an Arctic route must check more than just transit time. Insurance, ice class of the vessel, seasonal availability, political risks and potential Russia-related issues are mandatory considerations.

For dispatch planning, an additional route would generally be positive. In case of problems at the Suez Canal, Red Sea or Cape of Good Hope, it could offer another option. But we are still some way away from a reliable alternative.

In short: The Arctic route is now running for the first time with South Korean container freight in a practical test – whether it becomes a real competitor for Suez will only become clear in due course.
