> Starting Monday evening, 24-hour strikes will take place at six German seaports. Container terminals and hinterland transport must expect delays

---

Starting this evening, it will become turbulent at six major German seaports. Ver.di has called on employees at **Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Wilhelmshaven, Emden and Brake** to participate in a 24-hour warning strike. The action will begin with the start of the respective night shift.

Approximately **11,000 employees** are affected, for whom a new collective bargaining agreement is currently being negotiated. Ver.di is demanding **8.2 percent higher hourly wages, or a minimum of €2.50 more per hour**, with a contract duration of twelve months.

The employers' side, represented by the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS), is offering **5.1 percent higher wages over a contract period of 19 months**. Additionally, an increase of €300 in holiday allowance and a raise of €460 for certain allowances are provided. Ver.di and a majority of surveyed employees consider this offer insufficient.

For logistics, Hamburg is particularly critical. Employees from more than a dozen port operators there have been called to strike. These include the HHLA terminals **Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort** as well as the Eurogate Container Terminal.

What this means in practice depends on how strongly individual shifts participate in the strike. However, one thing is clear: if containers cannot be unloaded from ships or cannot be loaded onto trucks and trains, congestion quickly builds up. Even after the end of a 24-hour strike, a large terminal needs time to catch up on outstanding work.

---

Anyone moving containers this week through any of the six ports should actively monitor terminal status, pickup windows, and rail connections.

Particularly critical are tight export cut-offs, already booked truck slots, and containers with short free time allowances. A single day of strike action can quickly result in additional waiting times as containers and vehicles back up in the terminal.

For imports, verify whether planned pickup dates will still work. For exports, clarify whether containers will arrive at the terminal in time before vessel closure.

Rail operators and freight forwarders should also be involved early. Missed slots or delayed trains can further exacerbate the backlog.

In short: Anyone with Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Wilhelmshaven, Emden, or Brake in their transport chain should plan for additional buffer time over the coming days.

Ver.di has called for a 24-hour warning strike.

The strike is scheduled to begin on the evening of August 17th with the start of the night shift.

Affected ports include Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Wilhelmshaven, Emden, and Brake.

The wage round affects approximately 11,000 employees.

Ver.di is demanding an 8.2 percent increase in hourly wages, with a minimum of €2.50 per hour.

Ver.di is demanding a contract term of twelve months.

The ZDS is offering a 5.1 percent wage increase with a 19-month contract term.

Additionally, the employer side is offering, among other things, €300 additional holiday pay and an increase in certain container operation allowances by €460.

In Hamburg, HHLA and Eurogate are among the companies affected by the strike call.

A third round of negotiations had not been scheduled as of August 17th.
