The German Federal Ministry of Transport and DB InfraGO have revised their plan for major track refurbishment projects. For the years 2027 to 2031, 13 corridor refurbishments are now planned instead of the previously scheduled 21. The joint announcement from October 9 states the goal of increasing reliability in construction and ongoing rail operations.

In a corridor refurbishment, work on an important rail route is bundled together. For freight transport, the timing of track closures and which alternative routes remain available is particularly crucial. Therefore, fewer refurbishments in the period under review do not automatically mean unrestricted operations or fewer restrictions on individual routes.

The revised concept includes more stable alternative routes and a phased commissioning approach. From a dispatch perspective, this is an important point: a train can only divert meaningfully if the alternative route is suitable for its operational requirements. However, this general announcement does not replace the specific timetable of the contracted rail operator.

Shippers should therefore reconcile their existing transport plans with their rail partners. This is particularly worthwhile for fixed production windows or port connections. Which departures remain available? What transit time will be offered during the construction period? Are connecting trains and terminal opening hours coordinated accordingly?

For freight forwarding companies, it is also advisable to clearly separate confirmed construction periods from longer-term planning. Customers require reliable information for their next shipment. A political or operational target for several years cannot simply be adopted as a delivery commitment.

For sensitive cargo flows, an additional alternative solution may be worthwhile. This could be another rail connection or a road route. Whether this solution is necessary and economically viable depends on the specific assignment. The new planning provides reason to recalculate, but no basis for general statements about future delays or additional costs.

---

Have the current closure times and alternative routes confirmed for important corridors. Check port connections and time buffers together with your rail partner. In short: The new framework helps, but the individual transport chain still needs to fit.
