# Pony.ai and GAC Move New Robotruck Toward Series Production

Pony.ai and GAC Commercial Vehicle have unveiled a new heavy-duty robotruck. The vehicle is based on GAC's battery-electric T9 truck and is designed to operate autonomously at Level 4. This means: within a clearly defined operational area, the vehicle can essentially operate without continuous human driver intervention.

Series production is scheduled for later in 2026. Planned fields of application include long-haul transport, fixed logistics corridors, and port operations. Such repeatable routes are particularly suitable for initial commercial deployment because routes, access roads, and operational procedures can be well controlled.

The robotruck uses nine lidar sensors, three radar systems, and 13 cameras. Lidar scans the environment using laser light. According to the manufacturer, steering, braking, communication, power supply, computing, and sensor systems have multiple safeguards. If one system fails, a second unit is designed to take over.

Pony.ai expects 30 percent lower transport costs per ton-kilometer and 10 percent less energy consumption compared to conventional trucks. These figures have not yet been confirmed in broad daily operations. It is also unclear whether the cost calculation still includes a safety driver, control center, or additional maintenance.

For Europe, technology alone is not sufficient. Required are vehicle approval, clear liability regulations, suitable road sections, and an operating concept. Pony.ai plans market entry in Europe and the Middle East within the next two years, but has not announced a comprehensive rollout.

For dispatch operations, autonomous trucks first become attractive on fixed shuttle routes. It must be clear who takes over in case of disruptions, how a vehicle is recovered, and who is liable for cargo damage or delays. Shippers should evaluate pilot projects based on costs per actual tour, not manufacturer forecasts. Loading windows and handover to standard trucks should also be part of the concept.

In short: The autonomous truck is getting closer to series production, but approval and clean operations will determine its usefulness.
