> PanStar plans South Korea's first container test voyage through the Northeast Passage. Demand is rising, however full capacity booking has not been confirmed.

South Korean PanStar Line is preparing a first container test voyage through the Northeast Passage. According to current planning, the approximately 2,800 TEU chartered vessel is scheduled to depart from Busan on August 22, 2026, and subsequently call at Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Gdansk. The route passes north of Russia through the Arctic to Europe.

PanStar opened its own booking and quotation system for the voyage on July 22. Since then, inquiries have increased significantly according to the shipping line. There are already bookings and concrete negotiations for auto parts, synthetic resins, used vehicles, foodstuffs, liquid cargo, cosmetic products, and steel goods. Shippers from Japan and China are also interested in the voyage and could transship their cargo via Busan onto the vessel.

More than 150 representatives from shippers, freight forwarders, insurance companies, and logistics providers attended an information event. Among them were Samsung SDS, Hyundai Glovis, CJ Logistics, LX Pantos, Taewoong Logistics, and Intergis. This demonstrates that the industry is seriously examining the connection. However, complete capacity utilization of the vessel has not been confirmed to date.

The Northeast Passage could reduce the distance between Northeast Asia and Northern Europe compared to the Suez Canal route. PanStar indicates a potential time advantage of at least 20 days. However, whether this saving will be achieved in practice must first be demonstrated by the test voyage. Ice conditions, weather, speed, insurance, and regulatory requirements can affect the schedule.

The voyage is therefore not yet a new liner service. South Korea's government initially aims to gather experience, operational data, and findings on economic viability. Only after that will it be examined whether regular connections are feasible.

For freight forwarders, this route is interesting, but currently only suitable for selected shipments. When reviewing a booking, shippers should not only focus on short transit times. What matters is a reliable schedule, insurance coverage, cargo suitability, and a clear contingency plan.

The route runs through remote Arctic regions and along the Russian coast. Shippers and freight forwarders should therefore also review sanctions requirements, insurance conditions, and potential restrictions on payments or services. This is particularly important when Russian authorities, pilots, or icebreaker services are involved.

For planning purposes, the test voyage also means: limited operational experience, few alternative departures, and increased risk of delays. If the voyage is canceled or must be rerouted, there is no automatic backup connection available.

In short: The Northeast Passage could become an additional Asia-Europe route in the future. Currently, however, it is a single test voyage and not yet a reliable alternative to existing liner services.
