# Netherlands: Roads Blocked and Railway Sabotage at Over 20 Locations

The Netherlands experienced significant traffic disruptions on road and rail on September 15th.

Farmers protested against government plans and set hay bales on fire along several motorways, including the A2 near Breukelen, the A28 near Putten and Dwingeloo, and the A7 near Scheemda. Rijkswaterstaat announced it would close traffic lanes or entire carriageways where necessary; near Breukelen, smoke impeded traffic flow.

In parallel, rail infrastructure operator ProRail reported targeted sabotage at more than 20 locations. Pipes had been attached to tracks, primarily in rural areas in the central and eastern regions of the country. Train services were interrupted in several regions. International connections toward Germany were also affected: the ICE line 77 between Amsterdam and Berlin terminated early in Rheine, with bus services operating between the cities.

It is important to distinguish between the two incidents: the farmer protests are confirmed. For the rail track sabotage, the perpetrators and motives were initially unknown; the Dutch intelligence service AIVD is investigating together with police and the public prosecutor's office.
