> Maersk is imposing a temporary energy surcharge on certain land transport services. Different rates apply per country; electric trucks and rail transport are currently exempt.

---

Maersk has introduced a temporary fuel and energy surcharge for certain inland transport services in Northern and Eastern Europe. The company cites the supply situation in the Middle East and increased fuel costs as reasons. The announcement was made on October 13.

The highest surcharge rate applies in Estonia at 20 percent. Latvia follows with 16 percent, Denmark with 14 percent, and Sweden with 12 percent. Maersk indicates 7 percent for Finland, 5 percent for Lithuania. Norway is listed at 0 percent. The regulation applies to store-door shipments, meaning transports with a land portion organized by Maersk up to the agreed door address. According to the announcement, the price calculation date from October 14, 2026 is decisive. Electric trucks and rail services are currently exempt. The rates may be adjusted.

For freight forwarders, this means: existing calculations should be reviewed once more. Not every booking automatically falls under the highest rate. Country, transport mode, and the applicable date must be considered together. The calculation basis should also be clearly evident from the quotation. For existing customer contracts, it must be clarified how additional costs can be passed on. A switch to an alternative transport solution also requires verification of contract duration and actual availability.

---

Confirm the applicable surcharge with the provider for each shipment. Shippers should compare offered alternatives based on total costs and delivery dates. Agreeing on the price date prevents disputes at billing. In short: calculate surcharges per country and booking, rather than applying a flat 20 percent markup.
