The freight railway connects Dadri near Delhi with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, or JNPT, near Mumbai. The distinctive feature is its dedicated infrastructure for freight transport. Heavy long trains and double-stacked container trains do not have to share the route to the same extent with passenger trains. This is intended to enable greater capacity, more stable schedules, and shorter transit times. The corridor is simultaneously the logistical backbone of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor. Industrial centers, warehouses, inland terminals, and production facilities are located along this economic axis. For exporters in northern India, access to the most important container port on the west coast is expected to become easier. The anticipated benefits are clear: reduced congestion on roads and existing rail lines, lower logistics costs, and a shift from road to rail. However, these effects will need to prove themselves in daily operations. Critical factors include reliable last-mile connections, available terminal capacity, and proper coordination with vessel schedules at JNPT. For Swiss companies with production or procurement in India, the corridor could create new routing options. It is important to determine whether the supplier has a connection to an inland terminal and how frequently trains operate to the port. A modern main corridor does not automatically resolve local bottlenecks in the pre-carriage segment. --- Dispatchers should check whether the origin point is connected to the WDFC for India shipments. Offers should display rail pre-carriage and truck pre-carriage separately. Shippers can compare transit times to JNPT anew, but should plan buffer time during the initial phase. Terminal cut-offs and customs clearance remain important time factors. In short: India has a strong new main corridor, but the last mile continues to determine its usefulness. --- The WDFC was fully opened on September 8, 2026.
