> 25 days from China to Great Britain: The Arctic route saves time, but is seasonal, insurance-intensive, and no true Suez alternative.

---

The container ship "Dubai Tower" arrived at the British Teesport after a 25-day voyage from China. Operator Sea Legend describes the voyage as the beginning of a weekly, seasonal container service via Russia's Northern Sea Route. Eight sailings are planned between August and October.

The vessel departed Ningbo-Zhoushan on August 15. Figures on the cargo quantity vary: according to ABC, around 1,500 containers were loaded; according to Global Times citing the operator, 1,370 TEU; and according to The Maritime Executive, 1,300 TEU against a ship capacity of approximately 1,740 TEU. Cargo included energy storage systems, batteries, and solar components. Compared to the route via Malacca and the Suez Canal, the transit time was nearly halved, according to ABC.

Nevertheless, the Arctic is not a new main route. The navigation window is short and ice-dependent. Many vessels require Russian permits, weather advisory services, or icebreaker support. Additionally, higher requirements apply to the vessel, crew, insurance, and emergency planning. In case of casualty, assistance and salvage are more difficult than on established routes.

Sanctions must also be reviewed. The route runs along the Russian coast and is operationally highly dependent on Russia. For European shippers, this may result in restrictions from banks, insurers, or contractual partners, even if the cargo itself is not sanctioned.

The time advantage is attractive for high-value and seasonal goods. However, the small number of planned sailings and low total capacity demonstrate that for most supply chains, this remains a specialized solution for the time being, not a replacement for Suez.

Before booking, the route, insurance coverage, sanctions compliance, emergency procedures, and actual departure guarantee must be verified. Dispatch should also clarify what happens in case of ice, weather conditions, or missing Russian clearance. A short transit schedule is only valuable if the cargo arrives as planned.

In short: The Arctic can save time, but it is not yet a reliable standard route.
