> The planned COSCO takeover at Zippel is prohibited. Customers should review ongoing agreements and contact persons.

The German federal government has prohibited the planned majority sale of Hamburg-based logistics company Konrad Zippel to Chinese state-owned shipping company COSCO. According to Reuters, the Economics Ministry justified this decision with security concerns. The acquisition of 80 percent of shares was planned. The announced entry in this form has thus been halted.

The German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) had previously approved the purchase from a competition perspective. However, both reviews have different responsibilities: one examines competition, the other examines potential security risks posed by a foreign investor. For freight forwarders, this separation is important if they classify an acquisition as already secured.

The practical question now arises as to how Zippel will continue its transport operations and customer relationships. The prohibition alone does not imply either an operational shutdown or the cancellation of individual services. Those who dispatch containers through Zippel should therefore inquire with their contracting partner and apply the response to their own shipments.

A brief review is advisable: Who confirms the booking? Who invoices? Which agreed-upon capacities remain valid? For longer-running contracts, it is also worthwhile to review agreed services and termination periods. This is a recommendation for contract management, not a notification of already changed conditions.

Shippers should also review their transport chain from the seaport to the consignee. Different ownership would not have automatically meant more capacity or better transit times. Conversely, the stopped acquisition does not automatically mean worse service. What matters are the actual connections offered, the reliability of partners, and available alternatives in case of disruptions.

In conversations with customers, the confirmed status should therefore be on the table: The acquisition is prohibited. Statements about a new buyer or new ownership structure would be premature without further notification.

For dispatch, confirmed bookings and reachable contact persons count. Have changes to contract partners, billing, or capacity provided in writing. Additional adjustments should only follow concrete operational information. In short: The ownership transfer is on hold, ongoing transports must be reviewed individually.

A 80 percent stake purchase was planned.

COSCO was to be the buyer.

Zippel is headquartered in Hamburg.

The German Federal Government prohibited the transaction.

Reuters reported the decision on October 7, 2026.

The reasoning concerns security concerns.

The antitrust review had previously been positive.
