> Hapag-Lloyd is said to have reduced the cancellation fee for India customers to $100 USD. While there are market expectations for further freight rate reductions, there is no guarantee.

According to The Loadstar, there are signs of relief for container transport from India. The trade publication reported on October 16, 2026, that Hapag-Lloyd has reduced the cancellation fee for Indian customers from 300 to 100 US dollars per container. The information comes from industry sources; a new public shipping line announcement with a clear start date and complete scope of validity could not be confirmed. According to the report, the reduction should affect both the cancellation fee and a separate fee for short-notice booking changes (container rollover fee). At the same time, the report describes declining bookings on westbound routes and falling spot rates to Europe and the United States. The market expects that the recently high levels could halve in the coming weeks - this is a forecast and not an already valid tariff. For the Trans-Pacific route (TPI service), Hapag-Lloyd reduced the spot rate for the US East Coast by around 1,500 USD to 8,000 USD per 40-foot container. This creates new opportunities for shippers when purchasing. Offers should be compared with the same port of departure, destination, container format, and departure window. A lower base price is of little benefit if other surcharges are added or the desired departure is not available. The contract also applies to the cancellation fee. The older public Hapag-Lloyd announcement (as of July 2026) provided for 300 USD for a cancellation within 14 days before the planned departure (ETD). For a customer-initiated shift, it specified a separate time period. From this, the application of a later reported reduction cannot be automatically derived. Before rebooking, therefore clarify in writing: Which fee applies to the existing booking, what costs arise from the change, and is the new slot confirmed? Only then can the actual savings be calculated. Anyone who urgently needs goods should not make the shipping decision solely dependent on the hope of further declining rates. JNPA (Nhava Sheva) recorded a record of approximately 835,000 TEU in September 2026 - compared to approximately 649,000 TEU in September 2025.

What does this mean for me? Obtain new quotes for upcoming India shipments and have base freight, surcharges, local fees, and terms displayed separately. Do not adopt the possible halving of spot rates as a fixed price in customer quotations - it is a market expectation, not a guaranteed reduction. For cancellations and postponements, file the written confirmation from the shipping line: a lower cancellation fee does not automatically mean that fees for an unused slot will also decrease. In short: The market report shows easing; binding are the confirmed rate and the terms of your own booking.
