However, concrete funding has not yet been decided. --- On September 2, 2026, the European Commission launched the "EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance". This initiative aims to strengthen the maritime industry's value chains across Europe. Shipyards, shipping companies, inland and seagoing vessel operators, ports, suppliers, investors, authorities, regions, and research institutions can participate. The first application deadline runs until October 16, 2026. After that, according to the EU, the call will remain open. The background is strong competitive pressure from Asia. European shipyards have lost market share in commercial shipbuilding over many years. Particularly China, South Korea, and Japan have large construction capacities. Europe, however, remains strong in specialized vessels, complex equipment, and high-quality maritime technology. The alliance is intended to better match supply and demand. It will develop project lists for new ships, repairs, retrofits, recycling, and maritime technologies. This can include low-emission propulsion systems, digital shipyards, automated port facilities, or new solutions for inland vessels. However, this is not yet a finished investment program. The EU has not committed a specific amount of funding with the launch of the alliance. Rather, it wants to coordinate investment priorities and prepare viable projects. Public funding and private capital are to be deployed more strategically as a result. For logistics, this could become interesting in the long term. Modern ships require less energy, digital port technology can accelerate operations, and new inland vessels can replace older fleets. However, it will likely take some time before this results in greater capacity or lower costs. --- For dispatchers, there are no short-term changes. There are neither new timetables nor additional ship or port capacities. Shippers and freight forwarders should nonetheless monitor the alliance. If projects for new ferries, inland vessels, port facilities or alternative propulsion systems emerge, this could later bring new connections and better capacities. During retrofitting of ships and facilities, however, temporary outages or bottlenecks can also occur. Ports, shipyards and technology companies should examine whether participation makes sense. Joint ventures that are already technically prepared and have a comprehensible financing requirement are particularly interesting. In short: The EU first creates a network and a project pipeline. The funding and concrete construction contracts must then follow. --- The Alliance was officially launched on September 2, 2026. It is based on the EU Industrial Strategy for the Maritime Economy from March 4, 2026. The official name is "EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance". The first application deadline is October 16, 2026. Membership calls remain open thereafter. The Alliance covers seagoing and inland vessels as well as maritime and port technology. This includes construction, repair, maintenance, retrofitting, scrapping, and recycling. The Alliance is intended to build a pipeline of strategic projects. A dedicated funding amount was not announced at launch.
