> More than 20 DHL locations combine transport, storage, and battery services. The business ranges from electric vehicles to large-scale energy storage systems.

---

DHL is building a global logistics network for batteries, electric vehicles, and large energy storage systems. More than 20 specialized locations are already connected. In addition to transport and storage, they also offer diagnostics, testing, charging, repair, returns management, and preparation for recycling.

The business extends far beyond automotive batteries. Battery energy storage systems, or BESS, stabilize power grids and store energy from wind or solar installations. Some systems weigh more than 50 tons. In the first half of 2026, DHL delivered more than 1,100 such units worldwide.

For freight forwarders, this is a demanding field. Lithium batteries may be classified as hazardous goods depending on their condition and mode of transport. Damaged or defective batteries require special packaging, documentation, and approvals. Additionally, there are heavy transport considerations, customs handling, temperature control, and fire safety requirements in warehouses.

DHL combines services from contract logistics, air and sea freight, and project logistics to address these needs. In Halle, 13,000 square meters of battery-capable storage space is available. Another location in Hungary is planned for 2027. By 2030, DHL aims to expand its New Energy business segment to three billion euros in revenue. This is a corporate forecast, not revenue already achieved.

Before any battery inquiry, demand condition, chemistry, weight, and safety data sheet. Never treat returns like new goods. The recipient must also be prepared for unloading and interim storage.

In short: battery logistics is growing, but mistakes in hazardous materials and condition quickly become expensive.
