From July 31, warning strikes are possible – with risks for cargo handling and hinterland transport. --- The risk of warning strikes is increasing in German seaports. The peace obligation in the ongoing wage round expires on July 30, 2026. Peace obligation means: During this period, the collective bargaining parties are not permitted to conduct labor disputes. From July 31 onwards, ver.di can in principle call on employees to stage warning strikes. The wage round affects approximately 11,000 employees in Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven as well as in Emden, Brake and Wilhelmshaven. Ver.di is demanding an 8.2 percent increase in hourly wages, but at least an additional 2.50 euros per hour. The minimum amount is intended to particularly benefit lower and middle wage groups. The negotiation round on July 22 in Bremen ended without agreement. According to ver.di, the employers' offer fell significantly short of the union's expectations. For time-sensitive shipments, shippers should check whether containers can be delivered or picked up earlier. At the same time, customers should be clearly informed that there is currently no confirmed strike. In the event of delays, additional dwell times as well as demurrage and detention charges threaten. Demurrage is storage fees for containers at the terminal. Detention applies when a container remains outside the terminal at the customer or carrier for too long. --- The first round of negotiations began on July 22, 2026 in Bremen. The opening negotiations concluded without agreement. Ver.di is demanding an 8.2 percent increase in hourly wages. The minimum demand amounts to an additional €2.50 per hour. Approximately 11,000 employees are affected. The ports covered are Hamburg, Bremen/Bremerhaven, Emden, Brake, and Wilhelmshaven. The peace obligation applies through July 30, 2026 inclusive. Warning strikes are possible from July 31 at the earliest. As of Thursday evening, no specific warning strike had been announced.
