Canadian logistics software provider Descartes has acquired California-based Tai Software for approximately 100 million US dollars. The amount was paid from existing cash reserves. The acquisition has already been completed.

Tai offers a Transportation Management System, or TMS, for North American freight brokers. These intermediaries arrange shipments between shippers and transport companies. The platform guides a shipment from the initial quote through carrier selection, transport monitoring, to billing.

Tai uses artificial intelligence, or AI, for this purpose. Among other things, it can extract inquiries from emails, prepare quotations, track shipments, and verify invoices. It supports full truckload shipments, less-than-truckload shipments, container pre-shipments, as well as cross-border transportation.

Descartes brings additional building blocks to the table. These include carrier vetting and onboarding, insurance and safety data monitoring, fraud alerts, and real-time information on active shipments. These data elements are to be gradually integrated into Tai's workflows.

Is this already the start of major industry consolidation? Not quite yet. A single acquisition does not make an industry wave. However, the direction is clear: Descartes acquired MyCarrierPortal for carrier vetting in 2024 and TMS provider 3GTMS in 2025. Now, with Tai, another operational freight brokerage platform is being added to the portfolio.

For traditional dispatchers, this does not automatically signal the end of their jobs. However, routine tasks such as data entry, status inquiries, and invoice verification are likely to continue declining. What will become more important is handling exceptions, negotiations, customer contact, and reviewing unusual transactions. Particularly in cases of suspected fraud, incorrect freight rates, or missing documentation, experience remains essential.

At the same time, dependence on the software provider increases. Brokers should therefore carefully review pricing, data access, interfaces, and termination conditions. AI also only works as well as the data it receives.

For us, an integrated platform can mean fewer screen switches and less manual work. Quotes, carrier data, tracking, and billing are brought closer together. This saves time, especially in recurring processes.

Shippers can benefit from faster quotes and better status updates. However, no company should leave important decisions entirely to software. Carrier approvals, unusual price discrepancies, and fraud alerts should continue to be reviewed by a human.

Before switching, you should clarify which functions are already available and which will be integrated later. Equally important are data export, interfaces, support, and costs after the first contract period expires.

In short: AI handles more routine tasks, but the experienced dispatcher remains essential for control, exceptions, and difficult decisions.

Descartes announced the acquisition on August 24, 2026.

The purchase of Tai Software has been completed.

The purchase price was approximately $100 million USD.

Descartes funded the purchase using existing cash reserves.

Tai is headquartered in California.

Tai primarily targets its TMS solution at North American freight brokers.

The platform covers truckload, less-than-truckload (LTL), drayage, and cross-border transportation.

Tai integrates sourcing, carrier selection, transportation management, tracking, and billing.

Descartes plans to progressively integrate its own data for carrier verification and fraud prevention.

Descartes previously acquired MyCarrierPortal in 2024 and TMS provider 3GTMS in 2025.
