Global container trade reached a new monthly record in August 2026. Container Trades Statistics, or CTS, reported 17.46 million TEU. TEU refers to the standard size measurement of a 20-foot container. A 40-foot container counts as two units accordingly. The publication from October 8 surpasses the previous high set in July.

Compared to August 2025, the volume increased by 3.7 percent. For the first eight months, the increase stands at 4.7 percent. At the same time, the global CTS price index rose to 117 points. According to the provider, this is the highest level since July 2024. The volume and price figures refer to August, although they were only published in October.

For freight forwarders, this initially provides an assessment of the overall market. A global record does not indicate that ships are full on every route. Similarly, an individual connection may show more favorable rates even though the global price index rises in the observed month. Trade direction and timing must align for meaningful comparison.

In procurement, the specific route should therefore be the focus. Important factors include the desired departure, container type, applicable surcharges, and guaranteed service level. Free days for container return can also affect price comparisons. A mere glance at a worldwide average figure is insufficient for this purpose.

A record is neither grounds for automatic overbooking nor evidence that every price demand is justified.
