Multiple border crossings significantly increase costs. --- Canada is responding to new US tariffs and will introduce its own countervailing duties effective September 8, 2026. The rates vary depending on the product, ranging from 15, 25 to 50 percent. More than 700 product and tariff positions are affected, with an import value of approximately CAD 27.6 billion. The list includes steel and aluminum products, wood products, furniture, dairy products, fish, household appliances, agricultural machinery, paper and electronics. For many steel and aluminum products, the Canadian tariff increases from the previous 25 to 50 percent. Supply chains that cross the border multiple times become problematic. A raw material can go from Canada to the US, be processed there, and then return to Canada as US-origin goods. In this case, tariffs can be levied at various stages. However, automatic double taxation does not occur with every border crossing. The determining factors are the country of origin of the goods, the tariff classification number, and the specific processing. This is precisely where practice is likely to become cumbersome quickly. --- Freight forwarders and shippers should now review their commodity lists. Correct tariff classifications and certificates of origin are essential. Quotations with delivery after September 8th also need to be recalculated. Dispatch planning may also become tight if companies want to move shipments across the border before the deadline. According to Canada, US goods already in transit are exempt from the new measures. However, the transit status must be properly documented. In short: anyone moving goods between Canada and the US should verify origin, tariff number, and delivery date in good time. --- Canada announced the countermeasures on August 25, 2026. The new tariffs will take effect on September 8, 2026 at 00:01 hours. The tariff rates are 15, 25, or 50 percent. Affected are US imports valued at CAD 27.6 billion. The list includes more than 700 product and tariff lines. Steel, aluminum, furniture, and clothing may be subject to 50 percent tariffs. Household appliances, dairy products, and fish and seafood may be subject to 25 percent tariffs. The tariffs apply only to goods of US origin. Goods already in transit to Canada as of September 8 are exempt.
