> Declining spot rates improve the foundation for contract negotiations. Route, included costs, and committed capacity remain decisive factors.

Short-term ocean freight rates from the Far East to Europe remain under pressure. FreightWaves reports on Xeneta market data as of October 7, 2026. For the Mediterranean, an average of USD 4,007 per 40-foot container is cited. For Northern Europe, the value stands at USD 3,645.

Compared to September 30, this represents a decline of 5.9 percent and 2.5 percent respectively. The figures concern spot rates, i.e., prices for transport agreed on short notice. They must be distinguished from longer-term contract prices and announced carrier tariffs. The average is also not a binding offer for a specific shipment.

For shippers, a falling benchmark improves the basis for negotiations on new contracts. However, this does not mean that every existing price can be adjusted immediately. Contract duration, volume commitments, and agreed change provisions must be taken into account. A contract may also include guaranteed capacity in addition to price.

Freight forwarders should compare the same services when obtaining new quotes. This includes port of origin and destination, container type, departure date, surcharges, and free time. Free time is the period during which agreed additional container or storage costs do not yet apply. Different terms can quickly change an apparent price advantage.

For regular volumes, it may be worthwhile to request various contract options. For example, a fixed base quantity and separate quotes for additional shipments. Whether this is suitable depends on the shipper's planning reliability. A general recommendation to book all volumes on a short-term basis cannot be derived from the market data.

The desired delivery date also remains important. The cheapest connection is of little help if it does not serve time-critical production. Therefore, price and performance should be negotiated together. The current values provide a useful basis for discussion. They guarantee neither the next price reduction nor a free slot on the preferred departure.

Get comparable offers with equivalent service levels. Review contract terms, free days, and surcharges before switching volumes. In short: Renegotiating now can be worthwhile, but price and performance go hand in hand.
