LNG stands for liquefied natural gas: natural gas cooled to around minus 162°C, which shrinks it to roughly one six-hundredth of its gaseous volume. Only this makes seaborne transport economic on routes without a pipeline. At an import terminal the LNG is pumped from the tanker into insulated storage tanks, re-gasified and fed into the gas grid; send-out capacity is measured in gigawatt hours per day. For logistics, LNG matters in two roles: as cargo in tanker shipping and as a fuel for vessels and long-haul trucks fitted with cryogenic tanks. When an import terminal goes down, energy-intensive industry is hit first and freight volumes only indirectly.
