Level 4 is the fourth of six automation levels (0 to 5) for road vehicles under SAE J3016 and denotes high driving automation. Within a clearly defined operational design domain, such as a specific route, a port area or certain weather conditions, the system performs the entire driving task and brings the vehicle to a safe state by itself if a fault occurs. No human intervention is required there. Outside this domain, the vehicle does not drive in automated mode. Level 5, by contrast, would mean full automation without any geographic or situational restriction.
