The FAK rate (Freight All Kinds) is a flat carrier rate that applies to a container regardless of the type of goods it holds. Instead of maintaining a separate tariff for every commodity class, the carrier charges a single rate per container – usually per 20ft or 40ft unit – as long as no special cargo such as dangerous goods, reefer cargo or out-of-gauge freight is involved. For freight forwarders and shippers this simplifies costing and quoting, because mixed consignments move at the same price. The FAK rate is a base freight charge: surcharges such as the bunker adjustment factor, terminal handling charges and peak season surcharges, as well as pre- and on-carriage, are added on top. Not to be confused with the spot rate, the day-to-day market price for a single short-notice booking, nor with the contract rate agreed for a fixed period.
