# Coastal shipping

Coastal shipping is the carriage of goods by sea along a country's own coastline, between ports of the same state. In Australia, North America and Japan it is governed by cabotage rules and therefore often reserved to domestic operators and crews. It competes not with deep-sea trades but with rail and road inland: one coastal vessel replaces several hundred truck runs on a long corridor and burns far less fuel per tonne-kilometre. The trade-off is longer transit times, fixed sailing days and the mandatory pre- and on-carriage to and from the port. For shippers it pays off mainly on non-time-critical bulk, building materials, beverages and container flows between distant conurbations. Governments increasingly fund coastal shipping as a resilience measure, because it takes load off the road network and cuts the diesel consumption of the supply chain. It is distinct from short sea shipping, which also covers short cross-border sea legs, and from inland waterway transport on rivers and canals.
