The CO2 emission class categorises heavy goods vehicles by how much carbon dioxide they emit per kilometre driven, distinguishing in particular zero-emission vehicles, low-emission vehicles, and conventionally powered vehicles. Under EU toll law, this classification is the basis for how large a toll discount member states may grant a given vehicle — the lower the emission class, the greater the permissible discount range. What counts is the officially recognised classification of the specific vehicle, not its propulsion type alone: an alternatively powered vehicle does not automatically fall into the most favourable class.
