# Double-stack container

> Double-stack container transport means carrying two containers stacked one above the other on a single railway wagon.

Double-stack container transport means carrying two containers stacked one above the other on a single railway wagon. The arrangement doubles the loading capacity per train length and cuts the cost per container considerably, but it requires a loading gauge far above the European standard together with suitable overhead electrification or diesel traction. Double-stack operations are common in North America, China and India, where the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor was purpose-built for double-stack trains. In Switzerland and most of Europe the tight tunnel and bridge clearances rule it out.
