> Decarbonisation is the progressive reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions of an activity, a company or an entire industry, ultimately towards climate neutrality.

Decarbonisation is the progressive reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions of an activity, a company or an entire industry, ultimately towards climate neutrality. In transport and logistics it works through three levers: the energy carrier (alternative propulsion, renewable electricity, synthetic fuels), efficiency (load factors, routing, slow steaming) and modal shift to rail and inland waterways. Emissions are measured and reported under recognised frameworks such as the GLEC Framework or ISO 14083, split into Scope 1 to 3. The European regulatory framework includes the EU Emissions Trading System, FuelEU Maritime and corporate sustainability reporting duties. For freight forwarders, decarbonisation in practice mainly means being able to supply reliable per-shipment emissions data. It should be distinguished from offsetting, where emissions are not avoided but compensated through certificates.
