A cryptocurrency is a digital means of payment that is not issued by a central bank but relies on a decentralised, cryptographically secured ledger (blockchain) – the best-known examples being Bitcoin and stablecoins such as USDT. Transfers run directly between digital addresses and often via crypto exchanges, i.e. outside the traditional banking system. For forwarders and trading companies this is above all a compliance issue: sanctions authorities such as OFAC or SECO also designate crypto exchanges, wallet addresses and payment service providers. Anyone accepting or making payments in cryptocurrency must therefore carry out the same sanctions and anti-money-laundering screening as for a bank transfer – including screening of the platform involved.
