Zone picking is a warehouse fulfillment method in which the storage area is divided into distinct zones, each staffed by dedicated pickers who work exclusively within their assigned area. A customer order travels through all relevant zones in sequence, with each zone adding its items before the partial order moves on to the next zone or a consolidation point. This significantly reduces individual picker travel distance and suits high-throughput warehouses with broad product ranges. Unlike single-picker methods, zone picking requires reliable order consolidation at the end of the process. Depending on warehouse layout and WMS capabilities, sequential and parallel variants can be combined: in parallel zone picking, all zones pick simultaneously, reducing overall throughput time further.
