The freight forwarder or licensed customs broker submits the required documents to the relevant authority—typically a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and any applicable permits—declares the customs value and tariff classification, and pays duties and import taxes due. Customs then verifies the declarations, may order a physical examination, and either releases the shipment or requests corrections. Depending on the country, commodity type, and risk profile, the process takes anywhere from a few hours to several days. Errors or omissions in the paperwork remain the single most common cause of delays and additional charges, making thorough document preparation a core task in freight forwarding practice.
